Supporting the Movement: Black Girl Sunscreen

What do we like to do? REVIEW! Review!

That was a song from elementary school that we’d sing when reviewing for a test, and for some odd reason it has always stuck with me and no one ever gets the reference!

But regardless, welcome to The Post Grad Survival Blog🎉 In my most recently post, I announced an initiative that PGSB will be starting. Every month, we will be the reviewing a product from a black owned company. I believe that this will bring awareness to black companies that we can support on a regular basis. Plus it’s great way to keep myself accountable in continuously supporting the movement, while encouraging my readers to do the same!

We are starting with Black Girl Sunscreen! This product was created to encourage and gently remind POC that we need sunscreen just as much as anyone else. There is this misconception that because of the melanin in our skin, that we don’t need sunscreen. THIS IS FALSE! We need to protect our skin in any way we can and Black Girl Sunscreen does just that.

What makes this product different?

Black Girl Sunscreen uses NO parabens, or other harmful chemicals while infusing the finest ingredients to shield and moisturize your melanated skin without the dreaded white residue common with most sunscreen.”- https://www.blackgirlsunscreen.com

All the things we hate about sunscreen are non factors when using BGS! Say goodbye to that ashy film and smelling like a chemical plant!

When testing this product, I wanted to be truthful and really put it to the test. With COVID restrictions, I wasn’t sure exactly how to do this. But I used BGS when I go for my morning walk and on a spontaneous day trip to the beach (social distancing was in full effect). So let’s get into this review!

*this review is not sponsored. I paid with my own coin and even if I didn’t, I always do my best to tell the truth. It’s a commandment!*

What I loved:

  1. Natural ingredients- now, this is not an all-natural product and I wasn’t expecting that! I don’t think there is an all natural way to fight the sun’s UV rays. But BGS infused some natural ingredients that are all too familiar- avocado oil, cacao seed butter, and aloe. All things my skin loves and ingredients that I rarely see in sunscreen .

  2. The smell (or lack thereof)- BGS has a hint of that sunscreen smell for a moment, but before you know it, it’s gone. And it definitely doesn’t linger, which I can appreciate.

  3. The application- Applying this product was easy and did not leave a white cast on the skin. Just like any other lotion, it melted in my skin and did it’s job. I felt confident knowing that, I wasn’t at the beach looking ashy and didn’t have to spend 20 minutes rubbing this product into my skin.

What I didn’t love:

  1. The size- This product retails for $15. But given that I couldn’t find it at any of my local Targets (I went to at least 3) I had to order online, which brought my total price to around $20. THE BOTTLE IS SMALL! For $15, I’d like to use this product for the whole summer, but if wearing it as often as I should, I’d run out with the quickness. I’m a bargain queen, so I need as much BANG for my buck as possible. This product is just very expensive for the amount of product you receive.

  2. Reapplication?- It’s not totally clear how often you should reapply this product, but I’m assuming at least 2-3 times for a full beach day. But considering the price, I was hesitant to reapply. And when I did, I didn’t want to use much product or share because I didn’t want to run out. That’s not something I want to be worried about. I want to share this product with as many people as possible. Not be stingy because  of the price and amount.

All in all, it’s a great product! But needs a bigger size option for the price. I think Black Girl Sunscreen has tapped into an untouched market and can really go places in the Black Community with our support! So let’s get them there: on every shelf in any store so your girl doesn’t have to pay shipping!
